Come dine with us?

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

In a few weeks time, I will be watching Mary Poppins at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). Little old me, plus and three other couples, and nine children. This type of scenario usually leads to a mild panic attack - which is almost always centred around the question over where to eat?

The QPAC website helpfully lists a few options. All affiliated with QPAC of course. They have the Bistro, the Cafe, Russell Street Wine bar and the Lyrebird restaurant. The Bistro and Cafe both have outdoor seating and a more relaxed vibe. The Cafe is closed at the moment, while they give it a refresh. The food is uncomplicated and caters to a wide variety of diners personal tastes.

The Lyrebird restaurant is QPAC's fancier dining option, but it has always lacked atmosphere in my opinion. It feels a bit like eating at the airport, not very exciting.

Across the road heading back to West End, you'll find Fish lane. There are several excellent dining options there. Chu the Phat offers spicy Asian street food. They have a very reasonably priced banquet option for larger groups. And some truly memorable dishes. The fried chicken ribs are a personal favourite.

Maeve Restaurant has a much more intimate feel, with delicious sharing plates and an extensive drinks menu. It's a restaurant aimed at families, it's better suited for groups of adults, especially wine lovers.

Julius Pizzeria is still my personal favourite. There's just something about well prepared Italian food which ticks all the boxes. They are incredibly popular, which can make it tricky getting a table.

A more recent addition to Fish lane is the Southside restaurant. They describe their food as East-Asian. It has an upmarket yum-cha feel about it. With lots of variety in their menu and a stellar cocktail list.

For the night of the performance, and considering that kids aren't too interested in a properly prepared martini, we'll be heading to Olé in Southbank. They've been a family favourite of ours for years. Serving beautiful Spanish Tapás. The fussy eaters can contend themselves with Salt & Pepper Calamari, whilst the more adventurous can enjoy some authentic paella. After our meal is complete, we can take a pleasant stroll through the Sweetpea trellised walkway along SouthBank, and exit it right in front of the playhouse.

Wish me luck!
